ASA Call for New Juried Members

The Alberta Society of Artists is looking for new artists to join our juried membership.

The Alberta Society of Artists is the oldest society of juried professional artists in the province, providing art education and exhibitions in public venues since 1931.

The Society’s goal is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the visual arts inAlberta. You can support this goal by applying for Juried Membership.

Having an ASA membership is a great way for artists to stay connected with the Provincial art scene. Some other reasons to become a member are listed below.

  • The use of the letters "ASA" indicating juried signature status and an artist bio on the ASA website
  • One group exhibition per year exclusively for juried members in the ASA Gallery
  • Opportunity to recommend themes for future exhibitions and topics for artist talks & workshops

Call: Artist in Residence 2025

The Alberta Society of Artists is pleased to invite Alberta artists (over 18) who are interested in a self-directed research and site-specific work to apply to our new Artist-in-Residence Creative Program.

 

Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal to encompass an 8-week consecutive period.

The Alberta Society of Artists is a large part of Alberta’s visual arts history, through its members, its exhibitions, and other initiatives.

The ASA was founded in 1931, making it the oldest society of juried professional artists in the province. The ASA has an active membership of professional visual artists who strive for excellence.

Through exhibitions, education, and communication, the society increases public awareness of the visual arts.

This “Artist-in-Residence Creative” provides a rare look into our organization and the gallery complex at Crossroads Market in Calgary.

Deadline for Submissions is Wednesday, January 15, 2025, 11:59 pm.

NIPAI's New Year Scholarship Contest

In partnership with ArtUniverse, NIPAI invites experienced theatre directors, assistant directors, actors, teachers, and choreographers to apply for a full-tuition scholarship to join one of its international programs or workshops.

This contest is designed for professionals looking to enhance their directing skills, broaden their network, and gain international experience.

A list of potential contest awards:

  • A partnership with NIPAI at the 22nd annual IUGTE conference "Performing Arts Between Tradition and Contemporaneity" in 2025.
    • This includes a full scholarship for a one speaker slot and the opportunity for a group of up to 10 people to participate without paying any fees for participation.
  • A tuition-free access for a 3-week intensive workshop in Hungary, culminating in a performance in a local theatre.
  • Three spots awarded for participation in one of NIPAI's international physical theatre workshops in Berlin in 2025

To keep the excitement alive, the specific prizes will remain undisclosed until the winners are announced.

How to Participate:

  1. Record a Short Video (1-3 minutes): Share your story as a theatre professional, your goals for developing directing skills, and how this scholarship could support your growth.
  2. Post and Tag NIPAI on Social Media: Upload the video to Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, tagging NIPAI’s official account.
  3. Email the Link: Send the link to info@nipai.org with the subject “NIPAI's New Year Scholarship Contest.”

Residential Schools Memorial - government is seeking Indigenous Artists

On June 25, 2021, the Alberta government announced it would work with Indigenous communities to establish a permanent memorial on the Alberta legislature grounds for the victims of the residential school system.

Indigenous artists can submit a Expression of Interest for a memorial on legislature grounds to honour residential school students who never came home.

Funding

Up to $1 million.

Eligible applicants

This Request for an Expression of Interest is open to the following categories of Indigenous artists from or living in Alberta:

  • individual artist
  • artist-led teams
  • artist collectives
  • partnerships of artists

Recent familial connections to Alberta First Nations or with the Metis Settlements and Métis Nation Regions are required.

Deadline to apply: July 29 at 2 pm MT.

Now Accepting New Applications for Artist in Residency 2025/26!

KIAC Artist Residency

Founded in 2001, in a partnership with Parks Canada, the KIAC Artist in Residence Program has welcomed over 300 talented artists, musicians and filmmakers to Dawson City from all regions of Canada and around the world. Our alumni include Sobey Art Award nominees, Western Canada Music Award winners, and prize-winning filmmakers from film festivals across the globe.

The residence accommodates two artists concurrently for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work.

KIAC accepts applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators.

Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. All disciplines will be considered.

General call

Applicants may apply for residencies 4–12 weeks in duration.

Artists are expected to host one public artist talk or open studio event during their residency and may also have the opportunity to facilitate outreach programs such as workshops and exhibitions, intended to promote interaction and professional development, and provide access to a diverse range of contemporary arts practices and theories within the community.

Housing and studio space are provided. Participants are responsible for all travel and personal expenses including food and materials related to their work. No honorariums are provided.

Applicant Eligibility

KIAC accepts residence applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators. Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. KIAC encourages applications from artists of diverse cultural and regional communities including BIPOC or LGTBQIA2S+ artists.
All disciplines will be considered including but not limited to: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Design, Architecture, Photography, Installation, Performance, Video and Film, Filmmaking, New Media, and Audio.

Project eligibility

Residencies are available for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work. Artists’ proposed projects should take into account KIAC’s limited resources.Projects that do not require access to specialized equipment are most suitable to the residency program. Artists are responsible for ensuring any additional specialized equipment.

Call for Submissions - ADFA Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival

2025 Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival
April 2 – 5, 2025

The Pumphouse Theatre has presented the Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival with the Alberta Drama Festival Association for over 30 years and we are excited to do so again! Registration for 12 spots will open on a first-come, first serve basis beginning September 18, 2025 at 12 pm.  The Festival is scheduled to be held April 2 – 5, 2025 in the Victor Mitchell Theatre.

One play is chosen by a professional adjudicator to represent Calgary at the Provincial One-Act Festival. Winning plays from each region may receive travel and food expenses reimbursement for their participation in the Provincial Festival by the Alberta Drama Festival Association.

Registration Requirements:

  • All registrations must be submitted no earlier than noon on September 18, 2024 with a completed registration form and a $60 non-refundable registration fee. 
  • The performing group is responsible for royalty payments.  A letter confirming permission from the publisher or playwright must be included.
  • A clean draft copy of the script must be delivered by the January 15 deadline.  Photocopies will only be accepted for an original script. Outlines for collective creations will be accepted, but may not be eligible for Outstanding New Work. Improvised shows are not eligible.
  • Payment can be made over the phone (credit), in-person (debit, credit, cash, cheque), by mail (cheques) or by e-transfer. Make cheques payable to the Pumphouse Theatres Society. E-transfers are sent to admin@pumphousetheatre.ca with the message “OAPF Registration Fee”.
  • Participants who are members of CAEA, ACTRA, or IATSE are not eligible to participate in their professional vocation.
  • Plays must be one act in length. Performances between 10 and 60 minutes. No excerpts.
  • Each group is responsible for supplying its own technicians for stage management and light and sound operation. We can provide training to operators.
  • Each show must be set up in 10 minutes and struck in 5 minutes.
  • Casts shall be predominantly adult and from CALGARY.
  • All performances and participants must adhere to the ADFA Rules and Guidelines. More information can be found on the ADFA website: adfa.ca/about/rules-regulation

Awards & prizes are presented for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Director, Outstanding Performances, Outstanding Technical Merit, and Outstanding New Work!

Registration for the Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival will open Wednesday September 18, 2025 @ Noon. Registration will close when all slots are filled or by January 31, 2025.  Registration is on a first come first serve basis.
