Call: Artist in Residence 2025

The Alberta Society of Artists is pleased to invite Alberta artists (over 18) who are interested in a self-directed research and site-specific work to apply to our new Artist-in-Residence Creative Program.

 

Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal to encompass an 8-week consecutive period.

The Alberta Society of Artists is a large part of Alberta’s visual arts history, through its members, its exhibitions, and other initiatives.

The ASA was founded in 1931, making it the oldest society of juried professional artists in the province. The ASA has an active membership of professional visual artists who strive for excellence.

Through exhibitions, education, and communication, the society increases public awareness of the visual arts.

This “Artist-in-Residence Creative” provides a rare look into our organization and the gallery complex at Crossroads Market in Calgary.

Deadline for Submissions is Wednesday, January 15, 2025, 11:59 pm.

NIPAI's New Year Scholarship Contest

In partnership with ArtUniverse, NIPAI invites experienced theatre directors, assistant directors, actors, teachers, and choreographers to apply for a full-tuition scholarship to join one of its international programs or workshops.

This contest is designed for professionals looking to enhance their directing skills, broaden their network, and gain international experience.

A list of potential contest awards:

  • A partnership with NIPAI at the 22nd annual IUGTE conference "Performing Arts Between Tradition and Contemporaneity" in 2025.
    • This includes a full scholarship for a one speaker slot and the opportunity for a group of up to 10 people to participate without paying any fees for participation.
  • A tuition-free access for a 3-week intensive workshop in Hungary, culminating in a performance in a local theatre.
  • Three spots awarded for participation in one of NIPAI's international physical theatre workshops in Berlin in 2025

To keep the excitement alive, the specific prizes will remain undisclosed until the winners are announced.

How to Participate:

  1. Record a Short Video (1-3 minutes): Share your story as a theatre professional, your goals for developing directing skills, and how this scholarship could support your growth.
  2. Post and Tag NIPAI on Social Media: Upload the video to Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, tagging NIPAI’s official account.
  3. Email the Link: Send the link to info@nipai.org with the subject “NIPAI's New Year Scholarship Contest.”

Deadlines:

  • Submission deadline: December 15, 2024
  • Public voting on Instagram: December 16-22
  • Results announced: December 24

ISEA INNOVATIONS 2022 Exhibition Call for Submissions

International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA) is hosting our 31st annual international, open, juried exhibition INNOVATIONS 2022 and Pushing Boundaries [REBOOT] 2022 Symposium in St. Albert, Alberta. Both events are wonderful opportunities for Canadian artists. 

INNOVATIONS 2022 will be held in-person Aug 18-Oct 1 at the Art Gallery of St. Albert, Alberta. Significant international exposure, and over US$14,000 in prizes, will be awarded. The Call for Submissions is open from Mar 1-31. 

Pushing Boundaries [REBOOT] 2022 is our 31st Annual Symposium, also in St. Albert, from Sep 1-6. An exciting line-up of 20 artists and art professionals will present over 30 workshops, demos, keynote speeches and discussions. The City of St. Albert and innovative art supply retailer The Paint Spot have also partnered with ISEA to present PBR 2022. The City will provide studio facilities for workshops at St. Albert Place and at AGSA, in the heart of downtown. The Paint Spot will provide registrants with discounted workshop kits, a significant discount on online orders to September 30th, and an onsite demo of new and unusual products.

Alberta Culture Days grant applications open

The Government of Alberta is now accepting grant applications for Alberta Culture Days 2022, which will take place September 1 – 30, 2022. The month-long celebration will showcase talent from across the province to acknowledge Alberta’s heritage, arts, community spirit, and cultural diversity.

Communities and organizations can apply for the Alberta Culture Days grant to help build partnerships, encourage local talent, and boost existing cultural programs. There are grants of up to $10,000 available to support community and nonprofit organizations hosting events that celebrate culture. The deadline for submissions is May 12, 2022 at 4:30 p.m. Learn more on how you can apply.

Management of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX)

Since its inception in 1981, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) Travelling Exhibition (TREX) program strives to ensure every Albertan is provided with the opportunity to enjoy art exhibitions in their own communities in one of four TREX regions across the province.

The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA)  is seeking proposals from proponents such as non-commercial public art galleries and/or arts organizations with experience with public programming, art exhibition development/circulation of Alberta visual arts to manage the Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX) for the next five year contract term of April 1, 2025-March 31, 2030.

If you're passionate about diversity, building community, and supporting immigrant and newcomer arts professionals, this role is for you!

Summary

The Engagement & Outreach Coordinator supports ICAI’s presence in the community. The individual will be a great communicator who can boldly talk about ICAI and its purpose, programs, and interests to community members and potential partners building relationships in an organic and community centric way.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Please note that support will be provided for all these tasks, especially if you are new to the arts community)

Engagement

  • Create and implement an engagement strategy for ICAI Alberta expansion into other Alberta cities 
  • Identify and establish relationship with diverse cultural, newcomer and immigrant groups with the goal of making them allies that would share information on ICAI programs 
  • Identify and establish relationships with diverse arts organizations across the province with the purpose of expanding our programs
  • Plan and deliver engagement events 'info sessions' to introduce us to the community and educate them on our purpose, plan, and programs. 
  • Provide report of engagement and prepare on going work plan for the role
  • May be asked to attend public events as required to provide education on who we are
  • Connect with stakeholders and partners for engagement purposes
  • Support engagement
  • Other duties as assigned

Administration:

  • Liaise with other team members to gather information and resources as needed
  • Assist with grant and sponsorship applications
  • Prepare reports on role as needed

Required Skills

  • Research skills
  • Good presentation skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Knowledge of the arts is an advantage but not compulsory
  • Excellent working knowledge of Google drive

 Qualifications

  • Related work experience in the nonprofit sector
  • Team player, with ability to work independently

Additional details

  • This is a part-time 10 hours/week contract position
  • $20/hourly rate
  • Must have regular access to a computer and the internet
  • This is currently a work-from-home position with flexible hours

Now Accepting New Applications for Artist in Residency 2025/26!

KIAC Artist Residency

Founded in 2001, in a partnership with Parks Canada, the KIAC Artist in Residence Program has welcomed over 300 talented artists, musicians and filmmakers to Dawson City from all regions of Canada and around the world. Our alumni include Sobey Art Award nominees, Western Canada Music Award winners, and prize-winning filmmakers from film festivals across the globe.

The residence accommodates two artists concurrently for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work.

KIAC accepts applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators.

Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. All disciplines will be considered.

General call

Applicants may apply for residencies 4–12 weeks in duration.

Artists are expected to host one public artist talk or open studio event during their residency and may also have the opportunity to facilitate outreach programs such as workshops and exhibitions, intended to promote interaction and professional development, and provide access to a diverse range of contemporary arts practices and theories within the community.

Housing and studio space are provided. Participants are responsible for all travel and personal expenses including food and materials related to their work. No honorariums are provided.

Applicant Eligibility

KIAC accepts residence applications from visual artists, media artists and interdisciplinary artists, as well as curators. Consideration will be given to professional, established and emerging Canadian and international artists. KIAC encourages applications from artists of diverse cultural and regional communities including BIPOC or LGTBQIA2S+ artists.
All disciplines will be considered including but not limited to: Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Design, Architecture, Photography, Installation, Performance, Video and Film, Filmmaking, New Media, and Audio.

Project eligibility

Residencies are available for research, development and production of ongoing or new bodies of work. Artists’ proposed projects should take into account KIAC’s limited resources.Projects that do not require access to specialized equipment are most suitable to the residency program. Artists are responsible for ensuring any additional specialized equipment.

Literary Journalism 2025

Overview  

This two-week residency encourages the exploration of new ideas in literary journalism (creative non-fiction) and experimentation in writing. Designed to challenge and stimulate, the program aims to inspire creative pieces of non-fiction and to assist the writers in their completion. 
A preeminent space for long-form journalism, this residency emphasizes the strengths of thorough and articulate reporting, distinctive storytelling, and literary devices. 
Work created in this program has been published in many outlets including The Globe and MailThe Walrus, and The Atlantic, and pieces have gone on to win National Magazine and National Newspaper Awards.

Description

Writers will have time to:

  • work on their manuscripts in their individual studios.
  • consult with faculty members Kyo Maclear, Taras Grescoe, Sarah Berman, and Amanda Crocker (Between the Lines Press).
  • participate in group discussions. 

Faculty will provide mentorship and one-on-one workshops to discuss:

  • story ideas. 
  • craft concepts such as voice and structure. 
  • challenges writers may be encountering with their literary journalism.

Requirements

Literary Journalism is designed for writers seeking a professional development opportunity in a community of peers with the guidance of an experienced writer/editor, as each participant prepares a long form piece.

Applicants should be experienced professionals, active in the diversified fields of writing, including print or electronic media. This program is open to fiction and non-fiction writers, journalists, freelance critics or curators, artists, and academics, with an emphasis on those who can write for a lay audience with logic, vigour, and charm—and those who have a portfolio to prove it.

This program is not open to:

  • applicants who have taken part in a Banff Centre residency in the last year.
  • current faculty members of any other Banff Centre programming.

This program is run in English and only accepts projects that are being written in English. English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.
