Screen printing (or silkscreen) is a printmaking technique where layers of ink are pulled through a mesh screen to create a wonderfully detailed image, often with multiple layers of transparent ink interacting with one another. In this comprehensive workshop, students will gain an understanding of the processes involved in creating a screen print on paper within a professional printmaking studio and will leave with the knowledge and experience required to produce work independently.
This course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed.
Originally from Montreal Quebec, Statz completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2000, and received his Masters of Fine Arts degree in Print Media at Concordia University in 2008. Currently based in Calgary Alberta, Statz’s work has been exhibited across Canada, The United States, and Europe.

Monotypes are one of a kind prints that combine printing, painting, and drawing techniques with surprising and painterly results. In the course we will create monotypes with and without the press, using both additive and reductive techniques.
This is a great workshop for beginners, intermediate, and experienced printmakers who want to loosen up and embrace painterly mark making. Students will leave with multiple unique prints, a full understanding of how to create their own monotype prints at home and in the studio, and the renewed energy to create.

About the instructor:
Christina Krentz is an multidisciplinary artist, living and working in Calgary, AB. She is an experienced adult facilitator, known for her enthusiasm, and infectious passion for art. She has a background in painting, and approaches print making with a commitment to experimentation and chance. Christina is an active member with Alberta Printmakers, and the founding member of FEM ASSEMBLY, a feminist critique group in YYC.

Monotypes are one of a kind prints that combine printing, painting, and drawing techniques with surprising and painterly results. In the course we will create monotypes with and without the press, using both additive and reductive techniques.
This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation of a 3 layer reduction woodcut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of four evening classes.
The reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. Students will be instructed on ways of designing imagery for reduction printing, useful approaches to the carving process, the use of a registration jig, and finally the setting of the press and printing.
Participants should leave the workshop with a small edition of reduction prints designed and printed by themselves as well as a good foundation in the technique to allow them to continue with their own personal explorations.

About the instructor:
Jonathan Creese is a Trinidadian artist, currently living, working, and studying in Calgary AB. Being introduced to art primarily from the realm of printmaking, his work uses the language and sensibilities of printmaking to highlight the realities of the cultural and socio political landscape of his homeland. As of November 26th 2024 he is interested in ways of representing quantitative data visually, particularly in relation to homicide statistics in Trinidad and Tobago.

The holiday season is a wonderful time to reflect with family and friends. At the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, we are forging a deeper understanding of our role and responsibilities as Alberta’s provincial arts funder and principal supporter. We are in a period of renewal as we look forward to new opportunities. Whether it is the performing arts, literary, visual, film or video, the AFA’s job is to help individual artists and organizations explore, practice, create and promote their exceptional work.
We have a profound sense of optimism for the years ahead that is buoyed by the Alberta government’s commitment to increase AFA funding to a record-level $39.1 million by 2027.
We look forward to continuing our work with government for the betterment of Alberta’s arts sector.
Art and Alberta’s artists are at the heart of everything that we do. In that vein, I’m proud to continue the AFA’s tradition of highlighting an artwork from our collection. This year, I’m pleased to feature Crowsnest Mountain and the Seven Sisters by Dr. Joane Cardinal-Schubert.
This beautiful Indigenous work is representative of the mountain landscape in Southern Alberta. Cardinal-Schubert’s use of color is so appropriate during the holiday season.
